New Campus Soft Opening
On Thursday, March 19th, we welcomed community members, partners, and friends to the soft opening of Zara’s Center’s new campus in Emganwini, Bulawayo; a moment that marked not just the completion of new buildings, but the beginning of a new chapter.
The afternoon began with guided tours of the new campus, led by the children of Zara’s Center. The new campus includes a large multipurpose room for programming, two breakout rooms, staff offices, and caretaker’s quarters, alongside vegetable gardens and newly constructed chicken coops. The entire campus is supported by solar panels and a borehole water system, positioning it as a fully self-sustaining environment. From the outset, the unmistakable energy of the children set the tone for a day grounded in pride and joy.
This new facility will significantly strengthen our ability to deliver programs. The addition of a dedicated classroom-style space enables more structured academic support, alongside tailored tutoring designed to meet the individual needs of each child.
The afternoon transitioned into formal programming, welcoming over 300 attendees. Lesley Goldwasser, Founder and Board Chair, delivered remarks reflecting on the origins of Zara’s Center and the twenty-year journey to this moment. We also heard from Londiwe Mususa, a Zara’s Center alumni, who delivered a powerful address. She opened with, “If you want to see hope, you’re looking at it,” and spoke about her journey from joining the center at age seven to graduating with four A’s and earning admission to law school. Additional remarks were shared by Temba Mkhosana, Executive Director; Tapiwa Chizanna, PVO Chairman; Lindi Sibindi, representing Housing and Community Services for the City of Bulawayo; and Mr. Gibson Connick, Guest of Honor.
Throughout the day, the children of Zara’s Center reminded us that this space belongs to them. Through performances, dance, and song they brought the campus to life in a way that underscored both its purpose and its potential.
This project has been years in the making, developed in partnership with world renowned architectural firm Krueck Sexton Parters, based in Chicago. What began as an idea has now taken physical form—creating a space that will continue to evolve as we expand programming, deepen academic support, and open new pathways for growth.
While this soft opening marks a significant milestone, it is only the beginning. Looking ahead, we are focused on developing additional recreational infrastructure, including a basketball court, cricket pitch, soccer field, and playground.
We are deeply grateful to the many individuals and partners who made this possible—from our team on the ground to the broader community of supporters who continue to believe in this work.
